Gerald began working for the University of Indianapolis in 1950 as an adjunct faculty member in the Art Department. He was a full professor in the Art Department upon his retirement from the University. He taught at Fresno State during the summer of 1951 and was an adjunct faculty member at DePauw and Indiana Universities. He led several student trips to Europe.

Gerald served in the United States Air Force during the last two years of World War II.
