Hunter served as pastor at Salem Evangelical Chuch in Ohio (1941-46), Crescent Avenue U.M. Church in Ft. Wayne, Indiana (1946-67), District Superintendent in Ft. Wayne, Indiana (1967-1973), and High St. U.M. Church in Muncie, Indiana (1973-82).

He served on the Board of Trustees at Indiana Central College (1967-78), Evangelical Theological Seminary (1973), and Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary (1974-80). He served as president for the Ministerial Associate in Fort Wayne (1958-65), Exchange Club (1957-58), Board of Directors Coordinating Center for health and Rehabilitation Center, (1964-65) and Delaware County Ministerial Association (1974-76). He was a member of Kiwanis Club (1974-82), Goodwill Industries Board (1979-82), Meals on Wheels Board (1979-82), Citizens Advisory Board WIPB (1979-82) and Panelist Academy for Community Leadership (1979-82).

Upon retirement in 1982, he served as a church consultant in Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Florida, and Indiana, and as a visiting preacher in Leland, Michigan. He was a member of the Syracuse-Wawasee Rotary Club where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary's Highest International Award. He was also a member of Oakwood Foundation and Park's Board of Directors.

He was an avid tennis player. He played for his college team and continued to play for most of his retirement years.
