The University of Indianapolis invites to you participate in the unique opportunity to purchase the UIndy special recognition license plate for Indiana residents!

Available now, the UIndy license plate offers students, parents, alumni and friends a way to show their Greyhound pride while supporting alumni and student programs at the University. Each plate displays our mascot, logo and all numbers preceded by UI (for University of Indianapolis). The UIndy plate is also available for your motorcycle!

The UIndy collegiate plate is issued as the standard vehicle registration plate for passenger cars, recreational vehicles, and trucks weighing less than 11,000 pounds. To obtain your UIndy license plate, you will be charged $40 in addition to your annual vehicle registration fees. This amount includes a $25 donation to UIndy along with a $15 annual special recognition plate fee payable to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and is due with each renewal of your UIndy license plate.

Any Indiana resident is eligible to obtain a UIndy plate from your local license branch, and $25 of the $40 additional charge is directed to the UIndy to help support student and alumni programs.

How to Obtain a UIndy Plate for the First Time

Visit your local license branch and ask for the UIndy license plate. You may also obtain a plate online or by mail. If submitting an first-time application for a UIndy plate, please include the simple form and an additional $40 along with your registration to notify the BMV that you will be purchasing a special recognition plate from UIndy.  The additional cost of the plate will include both a $25 tax-deductible contribution to Uindy and the $15 BMV administrative fee.  An authorization form signed by the University to obtain your specialty license plate is no longer required—simply sign up and drive!
How to Renew Your UIndy Plate

When you receive your plate renewal notice from the BMV, simply pay the amount listed on the notice, return the form by mail and the BMV will send you a renewal sticker.  The total amount on the renewal form will include your annual vehicle registration fees along with the $40 annual special recognition plate fee, which includes a $25 tax-deductible contribution to UIndy as well as a $15 BMV administrative fee.  An authorization form from the University is no longer required.

Don’t Forget to Select the Waiver Option

Your gift and support are very important to UIndy, so please make sure to select the waiver option on your registration to receive tax credit for your gift* to the University. Selecting the waiver option allows the BMV to inform the University of your plate purchase and allows the University to acknowledge and thank you for your support as a donor to the University of Indianapolis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I order a specific number or a vanity version of the UIndy plate?
The UIndy plates are made and shipped to license branches across the state in sequential order, so unfortunately you are unable to request a specific number for your plate. Each branch receives the quantity of plates that it sold the previous year. Your plate number is dictated by the location where you purchased your license plate. For example, Branch #1 receives the necessary quantity starting with plate number 101, with subsequent branches following in order. You may instead request a vanity version of a UIndy plate through the BMV at an additional cost of $48. All applicable personalized license plate rules also apply to UIndy vanity plates. Please visit the BMV website for additional information regarding specialization. Vanity plate registrations are due on or before April 30 each calendar year and must be re-approved on an annual basis.


Do I get a new plate each year?
No. Your UIndy license plate is regarded as any other Indiana license plate. In order to keep your plate, please renew your license plate as you would for any other licensed vehicle in Indiana and include your $25 donation and $15 administrative fee. You will be issued a renewal sticker to reflect your updated registration.
